PASSPORT TO HEAVEN
BILL NEWMAN listens to the Russian pianist Nelly Akopian-Tamarina
The Czech conductor Rafael Kubelik remarked in a BBC broadcast not long after the pulling down of the Berlin Wall: 'I can immediately recognize someone musical I have never met before, by looking straight into their eyes.' En route to the Green Room at London's Wigmore Hall following an all-Brahms recital, I met Nelly for the very first time. Standing at the top of the stairs, she was looking rather tired, eager for a taxi to take her home. Suddenly she turned in my direction; her eyes immediately lit up, a broad smile appearing on her face as I was about to ascend towards her. Yes, I knew, instinctively that she and I would relate in 'All Matters Musical'...
