Voices and the Derby Concert Orchestra
For the third year running, Derby Concert Orchestra dipped into the Hollywood blockbuster film score repertoire for their Christmas concert (Derby Cathedral, Derby, UK, 4 December 2010). The problem is that, whatever its effectiveness in context, much of this music fails to stand up in concert. John Williams' Superman returns tends to sound merely like off-cuts from Star Wars, although Hans Zimmer's music for Gladiator is somewhat more interesting, while Victor Lopez's James Bond Medley doesn't avoid the bittiness that such things are prey to...
