The Sitwell Singers' first Derby concert of the new season (St Johns Church, Derby, UK, 30 October 2010) was an attractive all-German programme which underlined the debt owed by Mendelssohn and Brahms to their baroque predecessors.
A fresh, lively performance of Telemann's Ein Feste Burg was followed by the most substantial of Bach's motets, Jesu Meine Freude. This may have been written for a funeral service but there was nothing funereal about this glowing performance, making effective use of solo voices in three of the movements...
