Announced as Op 3, these four mythic pictures for trombone and piano follow an impressive list of WoO including a one-act opera, orchestral sinfonietta, variations for string orchestra and quartet, more chamber music, plus vocal pieces. The Conquests of Zeus is one of those infinite subjects that could inspire a work of Ring-like dimensions. One only has to think of the River Asopus (near enough to the start of the alphabet), who had twelve or twenty daughters. I simply cannot remember how many were ravished by Zeus, father of gods and men.
Oliver Rudland has sensibly confined himself to four notable victims, all of whom demanded fascinating disguises from the arbiter of human fate...
