MARIA NOCKIN experiences Metropolitan Opera's HD transmission of 'Das Rheingold'
On Saturday 9 October 2010, The Metropolitan Opera transmitted its matinée performance of Richard Wagner's Das Rheingold to cinemas around the world. For those of us who were seeing it at Desert Ridge, most of the seats were filled an hour before the 10am start of the show. Interestingly, most of the audience seemed surprised that there was no intermission. In all probability, many of them were about to have their first experience with Der Ring des Nibelungen.
The HD transmission began with some interesting background on Robert Lepage's extraordinary production which weighed 45 tons and cost approximately 16 million US dollars...
