The Hallé Orchestra and Mark Elder opened the new orchestral season at Derby's Assembly Rooms (Derby UK, 19 September 2010) with an object-lesson in making familiar music sound fresh and new. Bizet's L'Arlésienne Suite No 1 came up gleaming, with a crisp march in the Prelude, and a robust, slightly quicker than usual Minuet, with beautifully soft playing in the reprise and in the following Adagietto.
Hallé principals Linsey Marsh and Graham Salvage were the soloists in Richard Strauss' Duett-Concertino for clarinet, bassoon, harp and strings, a charming product of the composer's Indian summer that is starting to come into its own...
