Bobby Chen launches
Derby Chamber Music's new season,
heard by MIKE WHEELER
Pianist Bobby Chen launched Derby Chamber Music's new season (Multi-Faith Centre, Derby University, Derby, UK, 17 September 2010), and inaugurated the Society's new piano, with a recital that grew in depth and authority as the evening progressed.
The last three of Schubert's first set of four Impromptus were notable particularly for the unusual degree of agitation he brought to the middle section of No 4. The mercurial figuration of No 2 showed some insecurity in technique (also evident at other points in the recital), perhaps because he had not allowed enough time to get used to the instrument beforehand...
