RODERIC DUNNETT visits Gloucester for the 2010 Three Choirs Festival
If there is one place in Britain outside the BBC Proms and Edinburgh where it's possible to encounter music, especially choral music, of the highest standards, it's the Three Choirs Festival. The standards seem to go up and up, not least thanks to the Philharmonia Orchestra, which is resident. The administration and ticketing, too, are first rate. The festival this year was held at Gloucester -- the event alternates between Worcester, Hereford and Gloucester -- and the imaginative programme embracing largescale choral works, chamber music, song, Early Music and masterpieces of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, plus several works or new commissions from the Festival Composer, John Joubert, was undoubtedly one of the best in recent years.
In a sense Elgar is also resident at the Three Choirs...
