The centrepiece of Tom Corfield's recital (Derby Cathedral, Derby, UK, 11 August 2010) was Percy Whitlock's Sonata in C minor. Whitlock mainly produced small-scale choral and organ pieces of exquisite craftsmanship and great integrity, but in the Sonata he successfully transferred those qualities to a big four-movement work of impressive substance. Yes, there are definite echoes of Elgar, among others, particularly in the first movement's broad second theme...
