NOTEWORTHY IMPRESSIONS
GREGORY MOOMJY writes about the art of the outstanding production
A hallmark of Peter Gelb's career at the Metropolitan Opera has been the publicity that has accompanied every new production designed to kick off each new season. In the past four years, Lucia, Thais, Cio-Cio-San, and Tosca, as well as the respective divas who have played them, have received red carpet treatment worth the envy of Hollywood starlets. So far, each production has been received with as many accolades as was anticipated. However, this year's much promoted production of Tosca, directed by Luc Bondy, was booed profusely. Such an unexpected reception begs the question: what went wrong?..
