Today, we are all very aware of the influence of folk music upon composers. But what exactly qualifies as folk music? The boundary lines of geography and race are often shrouded in suffering and strong emotion. Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) originally entitled the third movement of his first symphony, Funeral March after Caillot, apparently nodding at a satirical painting of a hunter being wheeled out of their forest by its animals upon a funeral bier...
