Mary, Queen of Scots was a popular romantic heroine in continental Europe until well into the nineteenth century. Schiller's play Mary Stuart is famous above all for its fictional meeting between her and Elizabeth the First. Opera North's production of the opera Donizetti based on it (Theatre Royal, Nottingham, UK, 30 June 2010), while relishing the full dramatic power of this climactic scene, also points up the tragic tangle of sibling (or nearly sibling) rivalry and power-politics of which it is such a forceful turning-point...
