A new score of Elgar's 'Arthur', perused by ROBERT ANDERSON
The idea of an Arthur play to be written by Laurence Binyon went back to 1912, when it would have been staged at Covent Garden. The suggestion came from John Martin Harvey, who initially wanted the part of Launcelot till finally deciding for King Arthur himself. But war intervened, involving many a harrowing experience for Binyon in France; Harvey's interest waned, and performances to open on 12 March 1923 were to take place at the Old Vic Theatre in the Waterloo Road with an orchestra amounting to no more than a baker's dozen...
