Puzzling and Frustrating
Mozart's 'Idomeneo' at English National Opera, reviewed by ROBERT HUGILL
English National Opera's new production of Mozart's Idomeneo (seen Friday 25 June 2010) was highly anticipated. Not only is it some years since there has been a major production of the opera in London, but ENO had assembled an extremely strong cast. Director Katie Mitchell was responsible for After Dido, ENO's show at the Old Vic last year. Her last production at the London Coliseum was Handel's Jeptha, which has a similar plot trajectory to Mozart's opera. And singers included favourites such as Emma Bell (Electra), Sarah Tynan (Illia) and Paul Nilon (Idomeneo), along with highly thought of new comers Adam Green (Arbace) and Robert Murray (Idamante)...
