In 1924, English mountaineer George Mallory (1886-1924) and climbing partner Andrew Irvine (1902-1924) vanished near to the summit of Mount Everest. Sometime earlier when asked why he wanted to scale the world's highest peak, Mallory had famously replied 'Because it is there'.
There seems no better reason than 'because they're there' why an entire string quartet would chose to record Paganini's 24 Caprices for solo violin, Op 1 (published 1819).
Having said that, several recorded departures from the original are available on CD. Cellist Tamás Mérei has recorded them for Hungaroton with Péter Koczor at the piano (HCD31926-27)...
