MARIA NOCKIN talks to American mezzo-soprano Susan Graham
On a cold grey January day, I spoke by phone with Susan Graham in her upper West Side New York City apartment, which she described as seven minutes walk from the Metropolitan Opera stage door. It was a few days after her wildly applauded appearance as Octavian in The Met's HD movie of Richard Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier, and she was the reigning queen of the opera movie.
Maria Nockin: Was there music in the schools when you grew up?
Susan Graham: I lived in Roswell, New Mexico, until I was twelve. Then we moved to Midland, Texas, where I spent my junior high and high school years...
