Britten's 'The Company of Heaven'
and Renaissance Polyphony,
heard by MIKE WHEELER

 

Renaissance polyphony at its richest and a little-known early work by Britten were the focus of this year's Derbyshire tour by the hand-picked Richard Roddis Singers.

The first half of their concert (St Mary's Church, Derby, UK, 10 April 2010) filled out Victoria's Missa Salve Regina with plainsong, and motets by Victoria and Francisco Guerrero. The mass itself is scored for double choir, and the singers projected its intensity with warmth and commitment, bringing real panache and vitality to the antiphonal exchanges between the two groups, notably at the start of the Credo...
