Atmosphere is Everything

Weber's 'Der Freischütz,

Midsummer Opera is unusual in that it functions as a repertory company, casting operas from its company of singers rather than fixing different singers for each opera. So that for the company's performances of Weber's Der Freischütz (seen Friday 23 April 2010), Agathe was sung by Deborah Stoddart, whose recent roles with Midsummer Opera include Norma, Aida and Turandot, and Max was sung by John Upperton who has sung Pollione, Radames and Calaf with the company.

Der Freischütz is curiously under-represented in UK performances, so it was a pleasure be able to hear the opera in London once again, albeit in concert form. Midsummer Opera solved the problem of the piece's spoken dialogue by replacing it with a narration spoken by Tim Oxbrow, who played Samiel. The narration was devised by John Upperton...
