Well this was a concert of two halves, and no mistake (Assembly Rooms, Derby, UK, 22 February 2010). Vasily Petrenko and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra began with an account of Weber's Invitation to the dance that combined grace, energy, and a real swing to the rhythms. They were then joined by Freddy Kempf for a performance of Ravel's G major Piano Concerto that was not afraid to give this subtle, sophisticated work a bit of edge...
