Britten's 'St Nicolas'
at Canterbury Cathedral,
enjoyed by PIPPA HARE

Canterbury Choral Society's concert on 23 January 2010 [Canterbury Cathedral, Canterbury, UK] was devoted to five composers. To begin, two pieces by Percy Grainger, Handel in the Strand and The Londonderry Air with string orchestra and unaccompanied chorus singing without words. Michael Tippett's frequently performed orchestral work, the Concerto for Double String Orchestra, followed. Finally in the first half was Samuel Barber's Adagio arranged for choir with the words of the Agnus Dei from the Latin mass combined with the string orchestra.

The fifth and final work was St Nicolas, which was Benjamin Britten's first major post-war work written for children...
