According to jazz legend, the great Bud Powell was once stung to the quick by overhearing Art Tatum describing him as 'just another right-handed piano player'. Powell responded by playing the entire second set with his left hand alone, thus forcing Tatum to recant his criticism. Many of today's young pianists are predominantly 'right hand players', with a tiresome tendency to bring the top voice out to the exclusion of everything else; this may work up to a point for composers of the Liszt and Rachmaninov type, but it will not do for Beethoven....
