There seems little chance that the recession will ever impinge on recordings of Mahler symphonies. Michael Tilson Thomas has recently completed his cycle, Markus Stenz has just begun his. We are awash with the thoughts of Zinman, Gergiev, Dudamel, Eschenbach and many others. The heritage of Kubelik, Haitink, Tennstedt, Bernstein, Maazel, Karajan, Solti, Abbado and Chailly are just a few of the names that command respect if not awe in this repertoire. None of these recordings have much wrong with them -- risk your teeth and you'll find that you are biting into gold....
